TOURISM: Holiday Market may fortify Falls’ brand November 21, 2011 · Niagara Gazette

People living here, locally may have a different image, have different concerns than the eight million tourists visiting Niagara Falls each year. Reading the local newspapers, it seems to me that they are most interested in job creation, economic development; they want people to see Niagara Falls for more than water rolling over a rock. Festooned with lights, booths, Christmas decorations, and a cadre of eager shoppers, Old Falls Street is hosting the first-ever Niagara Holiday Market. In the tradition of European holiday markets and festivals, this initiative intends to bring more outdoor joy to the fair, frosty months of November and December. The event has been described as a hybrid of a German christkindlmarket, Rockefeller Center, and a Norman Rockwell painting (jolly vendors hocking their goods to red-cheeked children as parents look on). Ladies and gentlemen, start your busking

Last winter, Ben T. and I were trudging through the snow to the Elmwood Lounge for a late-night beer when we were stopped by a young lady who claimed to be a hip-hop clairvoyant. Intrigued, we passed her a few dollars and were treated to a sprawling freestyle session that included a bunch of semi-accurate personal information about our pasts and (maybe?) future.
